20.01.23 – Schools Closed due to bad Weather, 14 Abnormal loads removed from Motorways

Written by on 19 January 2023

Several schools in Staffordshire closed their doors yesterday, due to snow, ice and freezing temperatures.  More snow had fallen in the north of the county overnight, leading to difficult conditions on many school sites.

More than 30 took the decision to close, informing parents via text, email and school websites. Staff on school sites worked hard to clear sites in time for today.

County Councillor Jonathan Price, Cabinet Member for Education said: “Schools make their own decisions whether to close due to inclement weather, basing their decisions on conditions on the school site and surrounding area and in the interests of the health and safety of pupils and staff on site.”

14 abnormal loads will be staying with Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) until further notice following a successful road policing operation recently.

It proved to be an unlucky Friday 13 January for some drivers – with officers pulling them over for offences such as speeding, dangerous loads, driving without insurance, using false plates and mobile phone use.

Police worked closely with partners including the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), National Highways, HMRC and various police colleagues to spot and stop this offending.

As a result of this activity, a total of 14 abnormal loads have been taken off our roads and will no longer endanger other road users across Staffordshire and the West Midlands.

Inspector Sion Hathaway, who oversaw the operation, said: “Proactive operations like this allow us to identify those putting others at risk and take the appropriate action before anything dangerous happens.  We will continue to proactively police our road networks to ensure those putting others at risk are dealt with as proportionately and effectively as possible.”
