Brassed Off by Paul Allen has been adaped from the 1996 screenplay by Mark Herman – and this is the first time that this comedy-drama has been performed in the round.

Brassed Off is the powerful story about the fight for survival of a Yorkshire mining community, set in 1994.  The pit, the areas main employer, is on the brink of closure and the future looks bleak.

Ten years after the long strike of the 1980’s which many of the minors had still not recovered from financially, the opposition to the closures is not as resolute and determined this time round.  For many, redundancy packages seem more appealing than picket lines!

We see family struggles, tensions between workmates and relationship issues.   We see the loss of hope, dignity and fighting spirit in what used to be proud mining communities.

The Grimley Colliery Brass Band gives the miners something to take their minds off the inevitable, but even that starts to diminish as futility and despondency set in……. Until Gloria arrives ……..!

Brassed Off is a moving play with drama and comedy in equal measures with a touch of romance thrown in. It is turned into a brilliant play by the TCTC Group Champion Brass Band from Crewe, who performed faultlessly throughout.   The cast, as well as being talented actors, each playing their parts passionately and plausibly, were talented musicians as well, joining in with the Band effortlessly!!

Although the play is set in Yorkshire it could just as easily have been set in North Staffordshire which had its fair share of pit closures and devastating job losses, still affecting some communities to this day.

Brassed off is at The New Vic until Saturday 22nd June, and it is definitely one to see! Easy viewing with inspiring, uplifting music to get  your foot well and truly tapping!!
