National Changes To Found Property Reporting

11 February 2019 Local News

Staffordshire Police is advising the public of important national changes to found property reporting.

Following the initial announcement in October, from 1 February 2019, the police service will not accept and record found property except under certain circumstances.

The recommendation of the Police Front Counters Forum (PFCF), and agreed at the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), is that the public shall be encouraged to retain the property from the outset and make reasonable attempts to track the owner of items found.

Going forward, Staffordshire Police will handle found property under three main categories:

Accept and Record – Something is appropriate or legally required to be bought to a police station so that legal obligations can be fulfilled.

• Items capable of containing data for example mobile phones, computers, tablets.
• Cash within wallets that are identifiable
• Unidentifiable cash
• Items suspected of being involved in crime
• High Value Items
• Firearms and ammunition
• Weapons
• Drugs
• HM Forces ID, Equipment and Force Medals
• Explosives
• Chemicals

Process Immediately – For items that fall into this category presented to front counters, Staffordshire Police would take the item and forward it on to the appropriate organisation as listed on the rear of the item. However members of the public will also be encouraged to do this themselves.

• Passports
• Bank cards
• Identity cards
• Personal documentation (e.g. bank statements, benefit books)
• Birth, marriage and death certificates
• Driving Licences

Not accept – These are items that will no longer be accepted as found property unless they are suspected of being involved in crime:

• Bicycles
• Kitchen knives and cutlery
• Empty handbags, bags, wallets and purses
• Cases
• Clothing
• Perishable goods
• Animals
• Rubbish/Waste
• Umbrellas
• Keys
• Spectacles
• Watches (except if capable of containing personal data)
• Jewellery
