Free Breakfasts for Students at Discovery Academy in Bentilee
8 January 2019 Local News
Students at a Stoke-on-Trent school will benefit from free nutritious breakfasts from next week as part of a national programme.
The Discovery Academy, in Bentilee, is amongst the schools signing up to the national school breakfast programme delivered by Family Action.
The City is one of the government’s 12 opportunity areas to receive funding for the breakfasts to help raise education standards.
Employer liaison and careers advisor at the academy, Darren Owen, said: ‘Research shows that breakfast clubs that offer a free and nutritious meal before school can boost their reading, writing and maths results.
‘The initiative will also encourage our students to be punctual for the start of the day, become more active and provide extra-curricular activities such as extra reading sessions to improve their learning.’
Principal Simon French said: ‘At the Discovery Academy we strive to ensure that every child reaches their full potential.
‘Having their breakfast at school will enable them to get the best possible start to the day.
‘I am sure our students will benefit from this scheme which has had a really positive effect across other areas within the country.’
From Monday 14th January 2019, students turning up for breakfast at the Discovery Academy will be able to help themselves to cereals, porridge and bagels free of charge.
Students will be encouraged to arrive at school from 8.00am to take advantage of the offer.
