JOKING APART – ALAN AYCKBOURN – NEW VIC THEATRE
11 October 2018 Theatre
A very entertaining play about the lives of friends and neighbours and the impact that one very happy and affable couple has on the rest of the group.
Set in Richard and Anthea’s garden over a period of 12 years the play shows many different sides of human nature from cheeriness and contentment to envy and resentment. With possibly a little self-satisfied smugness thrown in … or not ….. are the golden couple just …. well ….golden? For the audience it is an agreeable mixture of amusing and moving with a touch of awkwardness thrown in!
The garden and tennis court setting is very impressive with the tennis matches very effectively taking place half off-stage.
Each cast member performed without fault, effortlessly bringing their characters to life, including Laurence Pears as the charming, easy-going Richard and Frances Marshall as the generous, vivacious Anthea. Leigh Symonds plays proud but cynical business partner ‘Sven’ and is hilarious!
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Joking Apart, and the play still retains the ‘human’ relevance necessary to make it interesting and enjoyable from the start to the end!
Joking apart is showing at the New Vic until Saturday 27th October.
