5 June 2018 Local News

The Apedale Heritage Centre, located near Newcastle-under-Lyme, has been awarded a special Editors Award at the prestigious 22nd Group travel Awards in London. The “Little Treasures of Britain” award showcases smaller attractions around the country that offer something special for group visits and is awarded by the Editorial Team at Group Travel Organiser Magazine.

The awards evening was a glittering event at the Park Plaza Hotel in London that was attended by Les Mason, a Trustee at the Heritage Centre. Les said “This award is in recognition of the hard work put in over the past 18 years by a small group of dedicated volunteers, past and present, who give their time freely to honour and remember our industrial past here in North Staffordshire”.

The award was presented by Val Baynton, editor of Group Travel Organiser Magazine who had visited the Apedale Heritage Centre earlier in 2018. Val says of the award, “I was delighted to present and award to the Apedale Heritage Centre, it’s a brilliant attraction that’s less well known in Staffordshire and is run by an enthusiastic band of volunteers”

This award comes shortly after winning a 2018 Certificate of Excellence by the website, TripAdvisor, making this the third year in a row. Previous awards include the Queens Award for Voluntary service.

The Heritage Centre is located just outside the village of Chesterton, near Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire and was founded in 2001 on the site of Apedale Colliery, which had closed a few years earlier in 1998. It is entirely run by volunteers and is a completely independent organisation.

The café is open every day at the Weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays you can take a guided tour of an authentic drift mine and look around the museum. The Apedale Valley Light Railway is located right next to us and operates from Spring to Autumn, and the Apedale Community Country Park is on your doorstep.
