Stoke Potters record first win of season defeating local rivals Buxton 56-34

20 May 2018 Local Sport

MAX Clegg romped to an immaculate 18-point maximum as the Stoke A.R. Richards gained their first victory of the season defeating local rivals Buxton 56-34 in the National Trophy at Loomer road on Saturday night.

The Potters took the lead in heat one as Clegg and Paul Burnett gained a 4-2 over former Potter Ben Wilson but the lead was short lived as William O’Keefe fell while leading heat two resulting in the youngster being excluded. In the rerun Lewis Whitmore took victory for the hitmen from Joe Alcock with Kieran Douglas third to level the scores up. Buxton took the lead in the next race after Potters skipper Tony Atkin took the chequered flag only to be excluded for not having his dirt deflector on result in the race being handed to Hitmen skipper Tom Woolley with former Potter Jon Armstrong second and Adam Extance third for a Hitmen 5-1. There was drama in heat four as Buxton rider Corban Pavitt fell and was excluded from the rerun and William O’Keefe attempting to avoid Pavitt going into the safety fence resulting in both riders going to hospital with Pavitt a scaphoid injury and O’Keefe a dislocated shoulder. Burnett and Alcock combined for a 4-2 over Whitmore as the Potters trailed 11-13 after the opening four heats.

The Potters got to grips with the meeting taking a maximum 5-1 heat victories in two of the next three heats as Clegg and Burnett and then Burnett and Alcock put the Potters 27-21 in front at the halfway point of the meeting. The Potters then clicked into gear with a 5-1 from Atkin and Extance in heat nine and then four successive 4-2 heat advantages to seal the points and the Potters first victory of the season. Clegg and Atkin completed the meeting off with a 5-1 over Woolley.

Potters team manager on the night Adam Isherwood commented “It was a long overdue victory tonight and a convincing one in the end the lads battled hard all night although it was disappointing to lose William (O’Keefe) who has been taken to hospital with a suspected dislocated shoulder. William started well tonight and would have most definitely been amongst the points tonight and after we lost him the five remaining team members did superb for us and adapted to the conditions well. Max (Clegg) was absolutely flying tonight which was really good to see and Joe Alcock got some good points and that tonight was a massive boost for him and all the other riders chipped in with the points as well and Paul Burnett backed the top two with a double figure score. Adam Extance suffered a few engine issues but still got points on the board and everyone has had a good tonight.”

STOKE 56: Max Clegg 18, Tony Atkin 13+1, Paul Burnett 10+1, Joe Alcock 8+2, Adam Extance 7+2, William O’Keefe 0, Rob Shuttleworth r/r.

STOKE make the short trip into Derbyshire to face the Buxton Hitmen for the second time within the space of 24-hours in the National Trophy at Hi-Edge Raceway, 3pm

The A.R. Richards Potters will be looking for a quickfire double over their local rivals and have plenty of experience of the Hi-Edge circuit with Max Clegg, Tony Atkin, Paul Burnett and Adam Extance all being former Hitmen riders. The Potters will await news on William O’Keefe before making a decision on the reserve spot and will operate rider replacement for Rob Shuttleworth.

Potters boss Adam Isherwood said “We are looking for a similar result to Saturday night, we have riders in our team that you could call track experts around Buxton and we are looking for a favourable result against them but I have no doubt that they will be smarting after tonight and looking to return the favour on us and hopefully for us they won’t get the sort of performance out of their guys that we’ve had out of ours and we are looking for a good result there.

Buxton will be looking to see how Corban Pavitt will be before making a decision on him once he has had x-rays done and have drafted in Anders Rowe as a guest for David Wallinger who has been taken ill while they will use rider replacement to cover the absence of the injured Connor Coles.

BUXTON: Ben Wilson, Corban Pavitt or guest, Connor Coles R/R, Tom Woolley (Captain), Anders Rowe, Kieran Douglas, Lewis Whitmore
