The 17 year old handed himself in at a police station in the early hours of Friday morning and remains in custody.

Officers were called after the victim was found injured near a McDonald’s at around 3.30pm on Thursday.

The boy died at the scene, despite efforts from the emergency services.

Lower Parade remains sealed off by West Midlands Police.

Police say several people were seen fleeing the area after the incident and officers are appealing for witnesses.

Additional patrols are taking place in the town centre to reassure the public.

"This is a tragic set of circumstances and our thoughts, and I’m sure the thoughts of everyone in the community, are with the boy’s family at this truly devastating time," said Assistant Chief Constable Alex Murray.

"A dedicated team of homicide detectives has worked non-stop on the investigation since yesterday and has made good progress."

Mr Murray appealed to the public to encourage young people to stop carrying knives.

He said: "We are working to deter young people from carrying knives through our Precious Lives project. Hundreds of thousands of school pupils have now seen the hard-hitting presentation which is designed to steer them away from knife crime. But this initiative is not enough on its own.

"We need parents, community leaders, schools and young people themselves to pass the message that it is never okay to carry or use a knife."
