Man detained as Catharine Road siege ends safely

11 May 2018 Local News

The siege at a property on Catharine Road in Chell Heath has concluded peacefully without any danger to the public.

The incident lasted for 30 hours after armed police were called to the address at around 2.20pm yesterday afternoon (10 May). During this time trained police negotiators were in regular contact with the occupant.

A 33-year-old man was detained willingly under Section 135 of the Mental Health Act at approximately 8:50pm this evening and taken to hospital.

Officers are now searching the premises for any weapons, which will then be catalogued as part of a criminal investigation.

Chief Inspector John Owen, commander for the Stoke North local policing team, said: “The professionalism of our officers means this situation has resolved itself peacefully and without incident. I would like to thank the local community in Chell Heath for their support and patience.”

The road is expected to re-open before morning, once the property search is complete.
