New Year, new ways to get fit and meet people

5 January 2018 Local News Local Sport

Residents of all ages can improve their fitness levels and meet new people at the same time by joining a walking group or enjoying table tennis sessions.

The Borough Council has launched the two activity programmes this January.

Sports officers will lead short walks around the borough twice a week. People are asked to meet outside the Council’s operational depot at Knutton Lane – opposite Newcastle-under-Lyme College – on Mondays, at 12.30pm, starting from 8 January and outside Jubilee2 in Newcastle on Fridays, at 12.30pm, starting from 12 January. It is free to take part.

Meanwhile, Jubilee2 is hosting several table tennis sessions which are aimed at a variety of ages and abilities. On Tuesdays, starting from 9 January, there will be one-hour sessions for women, disabled people and families beginning at 1pm, 2pm, and 4pm respectively. Older residents are invited to play bowls and table tennis from 1.30pm to 3pm on Thursdays, starting from 11 January.

All table tennis/bowls equipment will be provided. Admission costs £2.50 or is free for Jubilee2 members.

Cllr. Mark Holland, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “January is a time of year that many people reflect on their lives and decide to make some changes in order to become fitter, healthier or make new friends.

“The Council’s new sports programmes are the perfect way to achieve those lifestyle aims. Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to become more active, healthier and lose weight while table tennis is a fun and social activity.”
